College of Palliative CareMission
The mission of the College of Palliative Care (CPC) is to develop and
support leaders in interdisciplinary palliative care research and
education.
Definition of Palliative Care
The goal of palliative care is to prevent and relieve suffering and to support the best possible quality of life
for patients facing life-threatening or debilitating illness and their families, regardless of the
stage of the disease or the need for other therapies. Palliative care is both a philosophy of care
and an organized, highly structured system for delivering care.
Vision
The vision of the College of Palliative Care is to promote palliative care research and education,
and to advance palliative care as an academic and clinical discipline.
Goals
The primary goal of the College of Palliative Care is to provide support for the development of leadership
skills of junior, mid-level, and senior interdisciplinary practitioners who will advance palliative care
as an academic and clinical discipline through educational and research endeavors.
Leadership
To develop and support appropriate career development paths for
palliative care leaders at all levels (junior, mid-level, and senior),
including:
a. Support palliative care junior academic and clinical leaders in
launching and developing successful careers in palliative care
education and research through mentoring, peer support,
leadership development skills, and professional advancement.
b. Support mid-level and senior academic and clinical leaders by
establishing a research forum to discuss palliative care
educational and research issues, provide expert advice and
peer support relevant to the roles of academic leaders and
administrators (e.g., training, academic career development
and advancement, funding, productivity expectations,
mentoring, and resource management).
Research
To support the professional growth and development of palliative care research leaders.
a. Plan and host annual multidisciplinary research retreats in
conjunction with the AAHPM Research Committee.
b. Provide structured opportunities for interdisciplinary
collaboration.
Education
To support the professional growth and development of palliative care educational leaders.
a. Provide faculty development opportunities for palliative care
educators.
b. Plan and host annual multidisciplinary education retreats in
conjunction with the AAHPM Education Committee.
c. Provide structured opportunities for interdisciplinary
collaboration.
d. Support excellence in graduate palliative care education and
fellowship training as appropriate to each discipline.
e. Develop and promulgate innovative approaches to
interdisciplinary training in palliative care research and
education.
