Q: Why is the Academy launching a campaign now?
A: In conjunction with the AAHPM's 25th anniversary, Academy leaders launched the Shaping the Future Campaign to tackle the next wave of obstacles facing the field.

Q: What is the Campaign's timeframe?
A The Campaign runs from 2012-2013.

Q: What is the Campaign's financial goal?
A: The Campaign's goal is $1.5 million.

Q: How does the Campaign goal compare to AAHPM's annual budget?
A: The annual budget for the Academy is between $5-6 million.

Q: What is the current donation total?
A: As of spring 2013, current multiyear pledges, onetime donations and corporate grants total over $600,000.

Q: What is the difference between the "Leadership" and "Membership" Phase of the Campaign?
A: The "Leadership Phase" is the first stage of the campaign and began in summer, 2012; an initial group of 350 AAHPM leaders were asked to consider a Leadership Level pledge ($10,000 over five years). The second and final "Membership Phase" began in late 2012 and will extend into 2013; all members are asked to donate.

Q: Who are the campaign co-chairs?
A: The three co-chairs are Ira Byock, MD FAAHPM, Christine S. Ritchie, MD FAAHPM and Christian T. Sinclair, MD FAAHPM.

Q: Who are the members of the Campaign Steering Committee and how were they selected?
A: A diverse group of members were invited to attend information sessions about the campaign and join the steering committee. Members are: Amy P. Abernethy, MD FACP, FAAHPM, Janet L. Q: How will my donation help my profession and the patients I serve?
A: Your donation will support three priorities: Bridge the Imminent Workforce Gap, Educate both the Specialists and the Generalists in the Principles of Palliative Medicine, and Facilitate Effective Advocacy.

Q: What percent of my donation will directly support the campaign?
A: In keeping with fundraising standards, 80% (or greater) of your donation will be allocated to direct campaign support. The remaining 20% of your donation will fund the indirect expenses that make the campaign feasible.

Q: Why should I donate since I already pay for membership dues, conference fees and products?
A: Dues, fees and products provide AAHMP's annual operating revenue. These resources are not enough to support the campaign's crucial initiatives.

Q: Can I restrict my donation?
A: Yes, you can restrict your donation to one of three priorities: Workforce, Education or Advocacy. However, unrestricted donations are preferred, as they allow the board to respond quickly to the most immediate needs of the membership.

Q: Can I make a multi-year pledge?
A: Yes, campaign pledges can be paid on a multi-year basis, up to five years. Payment notices are generated quarterly, biannually or annually depending on the preference expressed by the donor. Fixed amounts (e.g. $2,000/year x 5 years) or tiered amounts ($1,000 year one, $1,500 year two, $2,000 year three, $2,500 year four, and $3,000 year five) are available to meet the donor needs.

Q: Can I donate stock?
A: Yes, however checks and credit card payments are preferred.

Q: Can I donate part or all of my estate?
A: Yes, pending AAHPM's legal review. Long-term giving options are available and include: bequests/living trusts, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, and charitable lead trusts.

Q: My employer will match my donation. What do I do?
A: Notify your employer and AAHPM will complete the necessary form to insure your donation doubles!

Q: Will I receive recognition for my donation?
A: Yes. Your name will be listed in a variety of sites including campaign ads, e-notices, website, annual assembly signage and program, and annual report.

Q: Can I donate anonymously?
A: Yes, many members prefer to give anonymously. Your name will not be listed in any AAHPM communications.

Q: Will AAHPM staff members know how much I donated?
A: Whether you donate publically or anonymously, only a few AAHPM staff members who oversee fundraising activities are permitted to view your confidential donation information. AAHPM policies ensure all donations are appropriately managed.
