Year-long Mentoring Program

The Year-long Mentoring Program funds mentor/mentee pairs to focus on professional development in education, research, clinical care, and administration. The program is open to AAHPM members and their senior mentors from another institution that will benefit from regular contact over the course of one year.

The program is to fund new mentor/mentee relationships only (pairs may not have worked at the same institution and/or on a project or committee together prior to application). Unless a candidate has transitioned to the field of palliative care at mid-career, preference will be given to mentees who are less than 5 years post-fellowship or terminal degree. The applicant pair will be expected to identify specific goals and products for the mentorship experience and to justify the need for long-distance mentoring. Nursing applicants will be referred to the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Mentoring Program; visit hpna.org for more information.

Applications are being solicited and will be competitively reviewed. Mentor/mentee awardees will be reimbursed up to $1500 in mentoring-related travel expenses per pair; including visits to both mentee and mentors’ institutions. Pairs are encouraged to attend the Annual Assembly, and if a scheduled meeting occurs, Assembly registration will be reimbursed. Funding will be provided over the academic year beginning in July. While the frequency of contact will vary, the expectation is that phone calls, e-mail contact, and/or meetings will occur at least monthly. A proposed timeline of scheduled mentorship meetings is a required component of the application.
