Physician Leadership Skills Development WorkshopThe College of Palliative Care is sponsoring a leadership skills development pre-conference workshop specifically for physicians on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 8 am - 12 noon during the HPNA/AAHPM Annual Assembly in Tampa, FL. Intended AudienceThe workshop is intended for junior physician faculty in academic medical centers and hospices. Abstract and FacultyJunior faculty in palliative care face substantial career development challenges. All academic physicians, whether primarily clinicians, educators, or researchers, will need to define their career goals, identify suitable mentors and negotiate in the workplace. To meet these and other challenges, junior faculty need to be well-prepared with key career development skills. This half-day precourse will introduce participants to a range of skills necessary to develop and grow a healthy career in palliative care. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from faculty in both “mini-lectures” and small-group interactive sessions. Lectures will cover three core topics and skills relevant to clinician educators and researchers, including articulating career goals, identifying appropriate mentorship and negotiating one’s job responsibilities. The mini-lectures will introduce each topic, and participants will then break into small groups facilitated by course faculty where the topic will be pursued further through targeted exercises and discussion.
