Nursing Leadership Skills Development WorkshopThe College of Palliative Care is sponsoring a leadership skills development pre-conference workshop specifically for nurses on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 6 pm- 10 pm during the HPNA/AAHPM Annual Assembly in Tampa, FL. Intended AudienceThe workshop is intended for advanced practice or senior experienced hospice and palliative nurses interested in clinical practice leadership skills development. Abstract and Faculty"Clinical Mentoring Matters: Nurturing Nurses" Do you want to improve your mentoring skills? Have you ever wondered how best to give feedback to your advisees? Clinical practice mentoring has long been a challenge in the busy world of nursing. This active pre-conference workshop will offer a valuable interactive discussion on the science and art of mentoring. Participants will leave this session with specific strategies improving their ability to mentor other nurses. Dr. Angela Barron McBride, retired from serving as the Dean of Indiana University School of Nursing, will discuss why mentoring is imperative to leadership and career development. She will provide an overview of the five career stages, methods of mentoring that are important at each stage, and will discuss the advantages for and responsibilities of both mentor and mentee. The importance of ‘sustaining career optimism’ and creating mentoring organizations will be covered. Nursing leadership in the 21st century will be discussed as well. Following Dr. McBride’s presentation, attendees will participate in interactive breakout sessions to further develop their professional goals and objectives, and will review effective techniques on how to most effectively provide and receive feedback. An interactive dialogue including role play will allow each attendee to develop a personal mentoring plan.
