About the Program

Consistent with its mission of developing and supporting leaders in interdisciplinary palliative care research and education, the AAHPM College of Palliative Care (CPC) will again support the CPC Research Scholars. AAHPM will begin accepting applications from US-based physicians, nurses, and social workers in January for funding to participate in the 2nd Annual Retreat and Research Symposium of the National Palliative Care Research Center (NPCRC), co-sponsored by the College of Palliative Care and the American Cancer Society (ACS), to be held September 16 - 18, 2008 in Snoqualmie, Washington.

The goal of the Retreat and Research Symposium is to advance the scientific endeavors of those who are or will become independent investigators actively involved in palliative care research through development of attendees' individual works in progress and improvement of specific competencies and core methodologies essential to conducting palliative care research. The meeting format will include didactic lectures, small group discussion by topic area and/or discipline, mock study sections, poster presentations, and networking opportunities. Recipients of the award will be expected to prepare a poster on their work in progress, be present for the entire retreat and complete progress updates at 6 months and 12 months following the retreat.

Participants in the Retreat and Research Symposium will include 12 CPC Retreat Scholars, as well as recipients of National Palliative Care Research Center Pilot/Exploratory Grants and Career Development Awards and recipients of American Cancer Society Palliative Care Pilot/Exploratory Grant Awards. Retreat faculty will include representatives from AAHPM, members of the NPCRC Scientific Advisory Council and Scientific Review Committee, and representatives of ACS and the National Institutes of Health. This breadth of participants provides a unique opportunity for interaction between new and established palliative care investigators.

CPC Retreat Scholar applicants should submit the following:

  • Completed application form
  • Biosketch, not to exceed 4 pages. Click here for the NIH Biosketch template.
  • Brief, 2-page description of a current or planned research project, including topic, study questions, methodologies, and populations

The successful applicant will be:

  • in the midst of or have completed formal research training (e.g., research fellowship and/or doctoral degree);
  • currently conducting research in palliative care;
  • have an identified research mentor; and
  • have research papers on palliative care or end-of-life issues published or in press, with at least one as first author

The CPC Retreat Scholars program is intended for individuals who are or will soon apply for a federal award (e.g., K award) or research funding awards (e.g., R01, R03, or R21). Priority will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to an independent palliative care research career in either a full or part-time academic appointment and are no more than 5 years out of their formal research training. Recipients of the 2007 CPC Retreat Scholars program, recipients of National Palliative Care Research Center Pilot/Exploratory Grants and Career Development Awards and recipients of American Cancer Society Palliative Care Pilot/Exploratory Grant Awards are not eligible for funding as a 2008 CPC Retreat Scholar.

The application deadline is now closed for the 2008 program. Applications for the 2009 retreat will be available Spring 2009.
