Choosing Wisely®: Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question

According to a report from the Institute of Medicine, up to 30 percent of health care delivered in the U.S. is duplicative or unnecessary. The Choosing Wisely® campaign is a national effort led by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation to help physicians, patients and other health care stakeholders think and talk about the overuse of health care resources. Choosing Wisely aims to spark conversations between patients and physicians about what care is really necessary. Learn more at

As a proud partner in the Choosing Wisely initiative, AAHPM is one of a number of national medical specialties to have identified "Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question." Each partnering organization has produced evidence-based recommendations to help health care providers make wise decisions about the most appropriate care based on a patient's individual situation.

AAHPM hopes that participating in Choosing Wisely will help increase awareness of the benefits of palliative care and hospice among both physicians and the public, leading to better care for more patients.

AAHPM's List

AAHPM's list of "Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question in Hospice and Palliative Medicine," provides targeted, evidence-based recommendations intended help promote conversations between physicians and patients about utilizing the most appropriate treatments and avoiding care that may provide no benefit. It includes references to the evidence behind the Academy's recommendations and information on how AAHPM developed them.

AAHPM's Choosing Wisely Task Force, which took the lead in developing this list, includes representatives of the Academy's Quality and Practice Standards Task Force, Research Committee, Ethics Committee, Public Policy Committee and External Awareness Task Force, as well as at-large appointees.
