Certification in HPM

Working together, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) achieved recognition for the subspecialty of hospice and palliative medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

ABMS Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2008-Present)
With the recognition of hospice and palliative medicine as a subspecialty within the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in 2008, certification in hospice and palliative medicine is now issued by 10 co-sponsoring boards including the American Boards of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Neurology, Radiology, and Surgery.

AOA Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2009-Present)
With the recognition of hospice and palliative medicine as a certificate of added qualification within the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists, certification in hospice and palliative medicine is now issued by 4 co-sponsoring boards including the American Osteopathic Boards of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurology and Psychiatry.

ABHPM Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (1996-2006)
Subspecialty certificates in hospice and palliative medicine were issued by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) from 1996 through 2006. A total of 2,883 physicians earned certification by meeting the eligibility requirements and passing the secure examination. AAHPM will support ABHPM Diplomates through the expiration of their ABHPM certificates.
