Annual Assembly of AAHPM and HPNA - (March 3-6, 2010, Boston, MA)

AAHPM, together with the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA), sponsors an educational conference each year.  The AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly is the premier educational event for healthcare providers who care for patients with serious or life-threatening conditions. Learn the latest in hospice and palliative care from leading experts in the field. Each year offers exciting and new features including programs on pediatric palliative and hospice care, working with and within the new Hospice Medicare Conditions of Participation, and the latest advances in clinical research, cultural, ethical and legal, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of care. This conference brings together more than 2100 physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and others who practice hospice and palliative care. The program offers paper presentations, plenary sessions, educational sessions and opportunities for personal and professional growth, and networking. 

General Information

Intended Audience 

The Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) is designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers interested in acquiring, maintaining, or expanding the skills needed to care for patients with terminal illnesses.

Purpose

As leaders in promoting excellence in hospice and palliative care, AAHPM and HPNA combine their expertise to advance the field, thus meeting the joint goal of improving the quality of life for patients and families facing serious or life-threatening conditions through education.

Objectives

The participant will be able to:

  • translate advances in clinical and scientific knowledge of advanced disease processes, symptoms, and symptom management into improved practice
  • assess patient pain and other symptoms and side effects, and recommend a care plan based upon the best available evidence
  • identify psychological, spiritual, social, and cultural aspects of patient care, and integrate support of those aspects of patient care into an overall plan of care
  • develop patient plans of care that incorporate interdisciplinary assessments and symptom management across all domains of care that are ultimately based on the expressed values, goals, and needs of the patient and family
  • apply sound communication principles with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
  • identify ethical, regulatory, and legal concerns related to hospice and palliative care
  • discuss effective strategies and challenges for the delivery of hospice and palliative care in diverse settings
  • identify new contacts for future collaboration
  • facilitate future research in hospice and palliative care
  • experience renewed vigor and enthusiasm personally and professionally
  • apply effective strategies using hospice and palliative care competencies in teaching and learning situations.

Continuing Education Credit

Physicians

AAHPM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

AAHPM designates this educational activity for a maximum of 25.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Each physician should claim only those credits commensurate to the time that he or she actually spent in the activity.

  Preconference Events: Up to 7.5 credit hours

  Annual Assembly: Up to 18 credit hours

Application for CME credit has been filed with both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Directors Association. Determination of credit is pending.

Nurses

HPNA is a cosponsor of the Assembly and an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC's) Commission on Accreditation.

  Preconference events: Up to 7.5 nursing contact hours

  Annual Assembly: Up to 18 nursing contact hours


Pharmacists

Application for continuing education credit has been filed with the Illinois Pharmacists Association. Determination of credit is pending. The Illinois Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. 

Social Workers

Application for formal social work continuing education approval has been filed with the National Association of Social Work. Determination of credit is pending.

Physician Assistants

The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category I credit from AOACCME, prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category I CreditTM from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 25.5 hours of Category I credit for completing this program.

Disclosure Statement 

In accordance with the ACCME and the ANCC Standards for Commercial Support, all CME providers are required to disclose to the activity audience the relevant financial relationships of the planners, teachers, and authors involved in the development of CME content. An individual has a relevant financial relationship if he or she has a financial relationship in any amount occurring in the last 12 months with a commercial interest whose products or services are discussed in the CME activity content over which the individual has control. AAHPM requires that all relevant financial relationships be resolved prior to planning or participation.
