Annual Assembly of AAHPM and HPNA--Registration Opens in September 2010!
AAHPM, together with the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA), sponsors an educational conference annually, the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly. Each year offers exciting and new features including programs on pediatric palliative care, working with and within the new Hospice Medicare Conditions of Participation, and the latest advances in clinical research, cultural, ethical and legal, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of care. The program offers paper presentations, plenary sessions, educational sessions and opportunities for personal and professional growth, and networking.
2011 Annual Assembly
The 2011 Annual Assembly will be held February 16-19, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada.

General Information
Intended Audience
The Annual Assembly is designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers interested in acquiring, maintaining, or expanding the skills needed to care for patients with serious or life-threatening conditions.
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
- Translate advances in clinical and scientific knowledge of advanced disease processes, symptoms, and symptom management into improved patient care.
- Assess patient pain and other symptoms and side effects, and recommend a care plan based upon the best available evidence.
- Identify psychological, spiritual, social, and cultural aspects of patient care, and integrate support of those aspects of patient care into an overall plan of care.
- Develop patient plans of care that incorporate interdisciplinary assessments and symptom management across all domains of care that are ultimately based on the expressed values, goals, and needs of the patient and family.
- Apply sound communication principles with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Identify ethical, regulatory and legal concerns related to hospice and palliative care.
- Discuss the effective strategies and challenges for the delivery of hospice and palliative care in diverse settings.
- Identify new contacts for future collaboration.
- Facilitate future research in hospice and palliative care.
- Experience renewed vigor and enthusiasm personally and professionally.
- Apply effective strategies using the hospice and palliative care competencies in teaching/learning situations.
- Identify opportunities and strategies for effective leadership within the field of hospice and palliative medicine.
- Identify opportunities to initiate, maintain, and advance the practice and sustainability of palliative care programs.
Continuing Education Credit
Physicians
AAHPM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
AAHPM will designate this educational eactivity for a specific number of AMA PRA Category 1CreditsTMeach year. Each physician should claim only those credits commensurate to the time that he or she actually spent in the activity.
Application for CME credit has been filed with both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Directors Association.
Nurses
HPNA is a cosponsor of the Assembly and an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC's) Commission on Accreditation.
Pharmacists
Application for continuing education credit is filed with the Illinois Pharmacists Association for each Assembly. The Illinois Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
Social Workers
Application for formal social work continuing education approval is filed with the National Association of Social Work.
Physician Assistants
The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category I credit from AOACCME, prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category I CreditTM from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society.
Disclosure Statement
In accordance with the ACCME and the ANCC Standards for Commercial Support, all CME providers are required to disclose to the activity audience the relevant financial relationships of the planners, teachers, and authors involved in the development of CME content. An individual has a relevant financial relationship if he or she has a financial relationship in any amount occurring in the last 12 months with a commercial interest. AAHPM requires that all relevant financial relationships be resolved prior to planning or participation.
