Clinical Scholars Program
University of Pittsburgh Institute to Enhance Palliative Care
Pittsburgh, PA
About the Site
At the University of Pittsburgh, we see patients in three distinct settings – a university based quaternary care center, a woman’s hospital with a large oncology practice, and a community based primary and tertiary care center which houses a NCI-funded Comprehensive Cancer Center. The models of care in each site vary slightly offering the learner different experiences. We have ten palliative care faculty (of whom nine are fellowship trained and or ABHPM certified) and see roughly 1700 new patients and 5300 return visits a year. At each site we work as part of multidisciplinary team, allowing the learner to work with social workers, ethicists, advanced practice and nurse practitioners, pet therapists and music therapist. We also have outpatient palliative care offices within cardiology, oncology and HIV clinics which may be of interest. Additionally, we work with the largest hospice in Western Pennsylvania, Family Hospice and Palliative Care, which has an average daily census of over 350 patients; two inpatient units with a total of 20 beds. We also have an active research program with an emphasis on communication and communication skills training.
In particular, University of Pittsburgh distinguishes itself from other programs by excelling in providing consultative inpatient palliative care to a quaternary referral population representing a wide array of advanced illnesses. Transplant medicine and advanced heart failure are two areas that are especially well represented in our patient population.
Training dates available throughout the year, excluding over major holidays.
Sample Schedule
The core experience for visiting physicians will be at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, our university-based quaternary care center. Physicians will participate in the daily interdisciplinary team rounds, starting at 8:30am, and see consults with the team throughout the day. The physician and non-physician members of the team will provide focused feedback and emphasize learning points after each patient encounter. Physicians will also take part in the larger weekly interdisciplinary team meeting and educational conferences. Based on physician interest and time, clinical experiences at other sites can be arranged. These include outpatient palliative care clinics, consultative services at Magee Women’s Hospital, and UPMC Shadyside which houses University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. During a one-week visit a physician will be limited to one day away from UPMC Presbyterian to ensure continuity and facilitate development of relationships with mentors. A second week could allow further exploration of the other sites.
