Continuing Education Curriculum for Hospice and Palliative Care Physicians

The following continuing education curriculum is intended to serve as a resource to physicians seeking comprehensive education in hospice and palliative medicine. This staged approach highlights introductory and ongoing education available through AAHPM and other organizations.


  Introductory Education

  • Primer of Palliative Care, 4th Edition
    Newly updated and expanded, this introductory guide is perfect for all members of the palliative care team who care for patients facing serious life-threatening illnesses in hospice and other settings. Contents include pain management, dyspnea, nausea and vomiting, constipation, delirium, anorexia, anxiety and depression, spiritual and existential suffering, delivering bad news, evaluating requests for hastened death, managing the actively dying patient, summary tables, and lists of key evidence-based references.

  • Fast Facts
    Developed by the Medical College of Wisconsin, End of Life Palliative Care Educational Resource Center, Fast Facts are peer-reviewed, one-page outlines of key information on important clinical topics for end-of-life educators and clinicians.

  • UNIPACs Self-Study Series
    The Hospice/Palliative Care Training for Physicians Self Study Program (UNIPACs) consists of nine books that may be ordered individually or as a complete set. CME available.

  • EPEC Curriculum
    Combining didactic sessions, videotape presentations, interactive discussions, and practical exercises, the EPEC Project aims to educate all healthcare professionals on the essential clinical competencies in palliative care.


  Ongoing Education

  • Current Concepts in Palliative Care: Update and Review Course
    This AAHPM course provides a thorough review of the current practice of palliative medicine, including clinical advancements and research updates. CME available.

  • Hospice Medical Directors Course
    This AAHPM course is intended for hospice medical directors and for those interested in becoming medical directors. Clinical, administrative, and regulatory issues are covered, as well as strategies for being successful within the interdisciplinary team. This course is also available on audio CD or CD-ROM. CME available.

  • Pocket Guide to Hospice/Palliative Medicine
    This concise, clinically-oriented reference features over 100 comprehensive tables and assessment tools and describes palliative medicine interventions for improving a patient's quality of life, particularly at the end of life.

  • Journal of Palliative Medicine
    A bimonthly, interdisciplinary publication reporting on the clinical, educational, legal and ethical aspects of care for seriously ill and dying patients. This journal is a benefit of membership in AAHPM.

  • PC-FACS (Fast Article Critical Summaries for Clinicians in Palliative Care)
    This monthly electronic publication provides palliative care clinicians with concise summaries of important findings from more than 30 medical and scientific journals and is a benefit of membership in AAHPM. CME available.

  • AAHPM Annual Assembly
    The Academy's annual scientific and clinical conference keeps physicians up-to-date with evidence-based research, best practices, and cutting-edge continuing medical education in the specialty. CME available.

  • Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC)
    CAPC provides health care professionals with the tools, training, and technical assistance necessary to start and sustain successful palliative care programs in hospitals and other health care settings.

  • Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice
    This Harvard Medical School program offers intensive learning experiences for physician- and nurse-educators who wish to become expert in the clinical practice and teaching of comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care, as well as to gain expertise in leading and managing improvements in palliative care education and practice at their own institutions.

    "Presentations for Medical Educators" and "A Self Study CME Course" are available on CD-ROM from the Medical College of Wisconsin's End of Life Palliative Care Educational Resource Center.

  • Journal of Pain and Symptom Management
    This journal is the official journal of the US Cancer Pain Relief Committee and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

  • Journal of Palliative Care
    This journal, published by the Centre for Bioethics, is a Canadian-based, peer-reviewed, international and interdisciplinary forum for practical, critical thought on palliative care and palliative medicine.

  • Journal of Supportive Oncology
    This journal publishes review articles and original research relating to practical management issues in the palliative and supportive care of patients with neoplastic diseases.

  • Palliative Medicine
    This journal is the multiprofessional journal of the European Association for Palliative Care.
