AAHPM LEAD - Leadership Education and Academic Development Program

Overview

AAHPM LEAD is an innovative 3-year leadership development program designed to promote collaboration among hospice and palliative medicine junior faculty as they prepare to assume leadership positions at academic institutions.

The program is designed to teach key leadership and organizational management skills helpful to navigating the complex world of academic institutions. The program will focus on issues such as promoting organizational change, conflict negotiation, strategic planning, mentoring and networking, leadership and personality styles, directing effective teams, and setting professional or personal goals. Professional development and leadership skills will be fostered through longitudinal-exposure networking with other junior faculty, exposure to and mentoring from senior faculty, interactive learning, and structured educational sessions.

Participants will interact closely with both junior faculty colleagues and 6 to 10 senior faculty leaders each year during biannual retreats. The first retreat took place October 2009. In 2010 and 2011 there will be a 1-day retreat each spring in conjunction with the Annual Assembly of the AAHPM and HPNA and a 3-day retreat each fall (total of five retreats over three years).

The remainder is covered by the Academy. Each participant will receive all materials from the program (final agenda, hanouts, notes, etc.).

Intended Audience

Based on review of the program following its 3-year cycle, if another cohort is selected, applications would be announced in AAHPM publications and on its Web site.

The program is aimed at junior palliative medicine and academic hospice faculty who are committed to developing as leaders in academic hospice and palliative medicine. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to pursuing an academic career in palliative medicine focused on education, research, or both.

Twelve junior faculty were chosen for this 3-year leadership development project. The faculty chosen in 2009 joined 20 other junior faculty who have participated in planning and developing AAHPM LEAD to make the full cohort of 32 junior faculty for the 3-year program cycle.

Eligibility Criteria

To foster geographic diversity, only one junior faculty member per academic institution will be accepted. For a list of institutions participating click here.

The eligibility criteria for participating in the leadership program are:

  • leadership potential in the academic research or education environment, as demonstrated by current and past activities and the recommendation of your chairman, palliative care program director, or hospice director
  • evidence of commitment to building the field, including generativity, innovation, and collaboration
  • highest appointment eligible is Assistant Professor
  • less than 15 years after MD degree*
  • ability to attend all five retreats over the next 3 years
Please note. Preference will be given to palliative care fellowship-trained physicians and those working with underserved populations.

* Exceptions to the number of years since completion of MD criterion may be considered in exceptional circumstances. The candidate must be at a junior-faculty level and demonstrate strong potential for contributions to the leadership of academic palliative medicine. The candidate must submit an additional letter describing circumstances and goals, and the letter should clearly explain how a curriculum aimed at the development of skills appropriate to the early stages of an academic career will be beneficial.

Application Process

Applications included a description from candidates regarding the following:

  • current professional activities and accomplishments
  • immediate and long-term career goals
  • commitment to pursue an academic career in palliative medicine focused on education, research, or both
  • expectations of what they will gain from participating in AAHPM LEAD and contributions they can make to the program.

Applicants submitted the following information in Word or PDF documents.

  1. Completed application form
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s chairman or palliative care program director supporting a commitment to the 3-year program. The letter should explicitly state that the institution will support the time to attend all five retreats and the program expenses (registration, travel, and hotel room). The registration fee for the 2009 Fall program is $250 and includes most meals; those applicants selected to participate will be invoiced separately.
Applications were reviewed by the selection committee and rated on strength of each eligibility criterion. In cases of an applicant being from the same institution as a member of the selection committee, the committee member recused themselves from reviewing and voting on that application. The recommendation of the selection committee was reviewed and approved by the Academic Palliative Medicine Task Force of the Academy.

Call for Faculty

The LEAD planning committee is looking for expert faculty to teach core content for this program. Faculty should be experts in fields such as leadership, management, organizational behavior, team building, or other topics considered central to the education of future leaders in academic palliative medicine. Faculty will be selected based on experience as an educator in their area of expertise, innovation of proposed curriculum, and applicability of content to the aims of the program. Time commitment for the faculty is based on topic and scope of curriculum, but on average faculty will be asked to teach one or two sessions at a single retreat. To be considered for selection as faculty send an email stating your interest to resources@aahpm.org. Include a description of your area of expertise, experience with teaching the content as it relates to palliative medicine, and your CV limited to 10 pages.
