Who Should Attend

This course is intended for hospice medical directors and for those interested in becoming medical directors.

How You Will Benefit

You will learn the expanded role of the hospice medical director under the new Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation and strategies for being successful within the interdisciplinary team. You will acquire the skills needed to overcome the administrative, regulatory, and clinical challenges that medical directors routinely face.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the clinical, regulatory, and administrative skills required in the role of the hospice medical director.
  • Identify the physical, psychological, psychiatric, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of patient care.
  • Discuss strategies for assessing and managing pain, other symptoms, and side effects based upon the best available evidence.
  • Describe the hospice medical director's role on the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Analyze the regulatory issues affecting the hospice medical director and identify strategies to fulfill regulatory requirements.

Continuing Education Credit

Physicians
The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

AAHPM designates the Hospice Medical Director Course for a maximum of 22.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(TM). Each physician should claim only those credits commensurate to the time that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Application for CME credit for the Hospice Medical Director Course has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

American Medical Directors Association
This activity has been approved for up to 22.25 credit hours of clinical and management education toward certification as a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care (AMDA CMD). The AMDA CMD program is administered by the American Medical Directors Certification Program. Each physician should claim only those hours actually spent on the activity.

Ground Transportation

From O'Hare International Airport

Airport Express. Shuttles depart from Door 1E, Door 2D, and Door 3E across from the baggage claim on the baggage claim area. Airport Express runs daily every 15 minutes from 6:05 am-11:30 pm. Airport Express Ticket Counters fro purchasing tickets are located at Door 1E, Door 2D, and Door 3F lower level across from baggage claim on the Baggage Claim level. Reservations are not required to downtown Chicago.

  • Single one way - $28 each
  • Single round trip - $50 each
  • Pair fare one way (2 together) - $20 each
  • Pair fare round trip - $36 each
  • Group one way (3 or more) - $15 each
  • Group round trip $28 each
  • Children under 6 years free
  • Children 6-12 are $15 each

Taxi. Taxis cost approximately $30 to $40 each way and can be found outside of baggage claim.

Train. The cost per person for a train fare to and from O'Hare International Airport is $2.50. Pick-up is located below the baggage claim area (follow signs to the CTA Blue Line stop). Take the train to the Clark/Lake Stop (approx. seven blocks from the hotel). Walk East on Lake Street, then turn left on Stetson Street and walk one block to the hotel. Trains are not recommended if you have more than one bag, as there are numerous escalators and turn styles in the station. You can also take a cab from the Clark/Lake stop.

From Midway Airport

Airport Express. Shuttles depart from Midway airport every 15 minutes. The airport express ticket counter and loading zone is located at Door 3, lower level across from baggage claim. Reservations from Midway to downtown are not necessary. The last Airport Express van leaves Midway at 10:30 pm seven nights a week. The Airport Express Counter is located at Door 3, Lower Level. Reservations are not required to downtown Chicago.

  • Pair fare round trip - $28 each
  • Group fare one way (3 or more passengers traveling together to same destination) - $13 each

Train. Elevated trains on the Orange Line can be taken from the airport to the State and Lake Street stop. Walk one block north to Wacker street. You can also take a cab from the Clark/Lake stop.

Other Transportation

Amtrak (Union Station). Union Station is located a mile and a half from the hotel. A taxi ride costs approximately $8 each way.

Greyhound Terminal. The Greyhound bus terminal is located two and a half miles from the hotel. A taxi costs approximately $10 each way.

Cancellations

All cancellations must be made in writing. A $95 processing fee will apply to all cancellations. No refunds will be made on cancellations postmarked after July 21, 2009. All refunds will be processed after the course. AAHPM reserves the right to substitute faculty or to cancel or reschedule a course due to low enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If AAHPM must cancel, registrants will receive full credit or refund of their paid registration fee. No refunds can be made for lodging, airfare, or any other related expenses.
