AAHPM LEAD - Leadership Education and Academic Development Program

Overview

AAHPM LEAD was an innovative 3-year leadership development program designed to promote collaboration among hospice and palliative medicine junior faculty as they prepared to assume leadership positions at academic institutions.

The program was designed to teach key leadership and organizational management skills helpful to navigating the complex world of academic institutions. The program focused on issues such as promoting organizational change, conflict negotiation, strategic planning, mentoring and networking, leadership and personality styles, directing effective teams, and setting professional or personal goals. Professional development and leadership skills were fostered through longitudinal-exposure networking with other junior faculty, exposure to and mentoring from senior faculty, interactive learning, and structured educational sessions.

Participants interacted closely with both junior faculty colleagues and 6 to 10 senior faculty leaders each year during biannual retreats. Beginning In 2009 there was a 1-day retreat each spring in conjunction with the Annual Assembly of the AAHPM and HPNA and a 3-day retreat each fall (total of five retreats over the three years).

Program Review

The pilot program was aimed at junior palliative medicine and academic hospice faculty who were committed to developing as leaders in academic hospice and palliative medicine. Applicants selected for the pilot program demonstrated a commitment to pursuing an academic career in palliative medicine focused on education, research, or both. Thirty-five junior faculty were chosen for this 3-year leadership development project.

A comprehensive reivew of the program following its 3-year cycle is being conducted. This information will be shared with the Leadership Development Committee charged by the Board of Directors wtih exploring and developing education, training and mentoring opportunities beginning in 2013 to meet with goals of leadership development for physicians in all practice settings of hospice and palliative care.
