AAHPM Membership

AAHPM represents nearly 5,000 physicians, nurses, and health care professionals interested in the specialty of hospice and palliative medicine. Members work in a variety of urban, rural, and suburban health care settings, including hospitals, hospices, managed-care facilities and academic institutions, with varied patient populations – from pediatrics to geriatrics. The majority of the Academy’s physician members specialize in family and internal medicine.

AAHPM offers a number of in-person and online educational opportunities that address critical topics in hospice and palliative care, from administrative challenges to evidence-based treatment of severe symptoms. These events are designed to increase your competence and ability to practice effectively with patients and families and within the interdisciplinary team. As a member, you will benefit from discounts on popular product and registration fees to attend and participate in educational programs.

RESOURCES that help you practice smarter

Stay up to date with numerous resources related to clinical practice, key developments in the specialty, and AAHPM activities. Two of the most highly regarded resources distributed to members are the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management and PC-FACS, an electronic “journal watch” that summarizes key articles from more than 50 medical and scientific journals.  AAHPM will also keep you informed about Academy initiatives and breaking hospice and palliative medicine information through an e-newsletter, Hospice and Palliative Medicine SmartBriefs, and a quarterly newsletter.  Additional AAHPM resources, including online products and textbooks, are available through the AAHPM bookstore.

NETWORKING that increases your professional connections

Gain unparalleled access to a network of valuable contacts via online directories, mentoring programs, volunteer committees and task forces, an online Job Board, and more. Communities and Special Interest Groups offer unique opportunities to network, collaborate, and share information with other members, both in-person and virtually, in areas such as pediatrics, long-term care, ethics, osteopathic medicine, and rural practice. AAHPM offers physicians a number of innovative career development programs, including year-long mentoring and leadership development. ADVOCACY that amplifies your voice

The Academy tracks critical issues and provides members with the information, tools, and training required to be effective advocates for their patients and their practice. In recent years, AAHPM has promoted policies that would increase the number of palliative medicine specialists, expand support for research, and improve access to palliative care services for patients with serious illness and their families. Leveraging its representation in Washington, DC, the Academy will continue to ensure that the interest of hospice and palliative medicine are advance in the legislative and regulatory arenas.

Categories of Members

Physician - $415
Practicing physician who holds an MD, DO, or equivalent degree who are actively engaged in the field of hospice and/or palliative medicine.

Affiliate - $205
Nurse, social worker, pharmacist, PhD/researcher, or other nonphysician health care professional with a demonstrated commitment to the purposes of the Academy.

Fellow - $130
Fellow who is currently in a fellowship program with an accredited institution; documentation must be provided from the current fellowship program director.

Resident/Student - $25
Full-time resident or medical or nursing student with documentation from the dean of a current program. This is a virtual membership (electronic access only).

International Corresponding - Free
Practicing physician who holds an MD, DO, or equivalent degree who is actively engaged in hospice and palliative medicine and who resides in a developing nation (defined by the World Bank as “lower or middle income”); this is a virtual membership (electronic access only).
