Price Now Reduced! AAHPM Physician Compensation and Benefits Survey -  2010 Report

Let’s Talk Money…

Are you paid fairly? Are you paying competitively?

Nearly 800 physicians responded to the survey conducted in late 2010, providing demographic information and details about their work settings and typical workload, as well as data regarding their earnings and benefits for the 2009 calendar year.

This 223-page report provides the most comprehensive data on HPM physician pay obtained for the field to date and, for the first time, allows for more meaningful comparisons to physician compensation in other specialties. It examines HPM physician demographics, workload, salary and other earnings, benefits and perquisites across the following 16 physician roles: National Medical Director, Regional Medical Director, Chief Medical Officer (MD or DO), Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Team Physician, Academic Program Chief, Fellowship Director, Clinical Director of Palliative Care, Clinician/Educator, Department Chair, Division Chief, Program Director, Partner—Independent Physician Group, Staff or Contract Physician—Independent Physician Group, and Other. Data permitting, compensation for a particular physician role is provided across all survey participants who reported it, by full- and part-time status, as well as for that role in a hospice versus palliative care setting.

  • Compare yourself against the nearly 800 hospice and palliative medicine physicians whose data comprises the survey results.
  • Examine work arrangements, salary and other earnings, benefits, and perquisites across a number of physician roles.
  • Access results online to create custom reports.

Use this in-depth, comparative data to examine your career options or, as an employer, make informed pay and benefit decisions.

Purchase your copy at the AAHPM Bookstore.

In addition to the report, you will also receive online access to Mercer PayMonitor®, a Web-based application that allows users to create custom data reports.

Why was this survey conducted?
When the AAHPM Board approved this project, it was responding to members who reported there was a need for reliable compensation and benefits data for physicians working in the field of hospice and palliative medicine. Because the specialty is relatively new, most existing physician compensation surveys do not break out this information for HPM physicians. So, the Academy’s Business Practice Task Force set out to develop a survey that would capture the unique nature of HPM physicians’ work arrangements. AAHPM engaged a third-party consultant to oversee the collection and analysis of this compensation data.

Who submitted data?
Nearly 800 physicians working in the field of hospice and palliative medicine responded to the survey conducted in late 2010.

Who administered the survey? Who compiled the data?
Best practices for producing annual benchmarking reports, salary surveys or industry profiles dictate that an organization utilize a third-party consultant to manage the process. AAHPM engaged Mercer – a firm with a longstanding history of producing compensation surveys for the health care sector – as its consultant. Mercer collected and analyzed the data that is reported in the publication now available for purchase.

What information does the report cover? Is data provided specific to pediatrics?
The survey report provides demographic information and details about respondents’ work settings and typical workload, as well as data regarding their earnings and benefits for the 2009 calendar year.

The data on workload, compensation and benefits is broken out across the following 16 physician roles: National Medical Director, Regional Medical Director, Chief Medical Officer (MD or DO), Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Team Physician, Academic Program Chief, Fellowship Director, Clinical Director of Palliative Care, Clinician/Educator, Department Chair, Division Chief, Program Director, Partner—Independent Physician Group, Staff or Contract Physician—Independent Physician Group, and Other.

Data permitting, compensation for a particular physician role is provided across all survey participants who reported it, by full- and part-time status, as well as for that role in a hospice versus palliative care setting.

Note: There was an insufficient response from pediatric physicians to allow for survey data to be pulled out and reported specific to pediatrics. (A minimum number of responses was needed for reporting any data to protect the privacy of individual respondents.)

Why isn’t the report free to AAHPM members? How did you determine the cost of the report?
The survey report pricing reflects the Academy’s effort to provide fair value to all of our members while keeping our annual dues as low as possible. The price of this report has been reduced for 2013.

AAHPM has grown tremendously over the past 5 years (over a 100% increase in membership).  As such, the organization now represents a very broad constituency with different interests and needs.  When the Academy initiates projects that may not be of interest to all members, a fee is typically added to help defray these costs. In the case of the compensation survey, the product was specifically requested (via member survey) by a substantial number – but not all – of our members.  So, product sales are intended to cover the costs of consultants, staff oversight, printing, marketing, and distribution so that these are not reflected in any dues increase.

The original price point on this report is actually substantially lower than other similar surveys for other specialties. AAHPM looked at 40 national medical specialty societies to determine how those groups that conduct compensation surveys priced the resulting product. While many societies refer their members to participate in the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) compensation survey, some had conducted their own. Overall, the charge for a report of survey data, whether packaged as a printed or e-product, ranged from no cost to over $700. It was typical for organizations to charge something and to offer discounts according to whether the purchaser was a survey participant or a member of the association.

AAHPM survey participants received a discount on the purchase of the report and a free copy of the Executive Summary. Survey findings were also highlighted in the Academy’s newsletter, AAHPM Quarterly, which members received. AAHPM members benefit from a reduced rate on this and all Academy products.
